I agree with you, Jgnat. All one can do in this situation is state your beliefs, what you will take and what you won't. Then you have to trust the medical professionals. That's why facing surgery or any procedure is so scary, you are totally giving up control for a period of time. Physicians are not "looking" for ways to test you or stomp on your religious beliefs. Plus, it is very frustrating talking to patients with limited medical education. I have sat in on such meetings with physicians on behalf of brothers and have even heard things like "I'll sue you if my belief is violated." If I were in the doctor's shoes I would not touch them with a ten foot pole.

I met with a surgeon yesterday about blood - wow
by BonaFide ini was asked by a friend to go with an older sister yesterday to the hospital to talk with her surgeon about her upcoming major surgery.
hospital liason committee told her to watch the society's video on blood, and if she can't get her surgeon to agree on non-blood treatments, then they will help.
it was the weirdest experience of my life.

I know exactly where you are coming from Flipper. We were never da'ed or df'ed. But at one point with a couple of kids, two people working and a new house my husband decided he didn't want to be appointed anymore. It was just too much. Well all of a sudden no more invitations to weddings or to homes for dinner. The funny thing was that we can't think of one person we "have not" had in our home for dinner or a cookout. I understand some people don't entertain or just don't have the money. I did not have them so they would have me back, just to be nice, but after years go by, it would have been nice to be invited out for coffee after service or something. As the kids got older it just became too painful to see them be excluded. Alot of it had to do with my kids playing a season of soccer or basketball (no meetings missed). Also alot of women in our cong. stay home, pioneer and home school and I have a career, just don't fit in socially. It took me a lifetime to come to these conclusions. The funny thing is I "still" get invited to gift giving affairs like baby showers, graduations (rare occasions for the home school set), even wedding showers (but not the wedding...... how tacky.) So now we associate with workmates, neighbors, parents of kids from school. It's so much more relaxed, not worried that I am going to say something wrong. And yes we get invited back!

I know alot of pioneers that rarely make their time. They say they were sick or they have a family member that is the service overseer and it just gets glossed over. Where else in the world can you get a title and not put in the work? With lower hour requirements they are going to want everyone to pioneer at least a few times a year. The announcement will probably accompany one less meeting a week and they will reason this is how you should spent your new found time.

Don't lean upon your own understanding ...
by easyreader1970 inthe wbts keeps trying to cram proverbs 3:5,6 down the throats of its members lately.
i have no doubt that within the next couple of years it will be the year's text.
i noticed that in the september "public" watchtower, they equate higher education with the badness of illegal drugs, social websites, and fornication.

Yes Easyreader. It is the 9-1-2008 issue , page 10 in the green box. "What will be the end afterward"? Higher education is equated with smoking, drug use, using the internet for a personal profiles and watching a movie with violence with and immorality. I have to admit when I went back to school I did have to contend with the constant pressures of the sex slave industry (they apparently need middle aged mommies) but I resisted!

You have such a kind heart Flipper. Working in a hospital, I see first hand the plight of others, not just the patients, but housekeepers and others who work way harder physically than I ever could. Only to find out that one of the women cleans toilets 10 hours a day for 8 bucks an hour and takes care of a husband who has had a stroke and an orphaned grandchild. It just seems so unfair that nothing goes right for some people. I think it is important for us to take note and make their life better in any small way we can, sometimes it's just a hug or a cup of coffee and "how are you today"? It seems like you did this for this man. Such a good reminder to appreciate our life. I'm sorry for your loss.

Higher Education - do you know any witnesses who are College Lecturers?
by eyeslice init has become increasingly apparent that the society is currently taking a hard line on university/college education for the young.
however, this policy must put some witnesses in an awkward position.
i know of an elder who is a prominent university professor, in fact he is a world authority in his field of work, which is a medical area that seeks to better the lot of humankind in general.

I only know one. When I talked to him about going back to school, he was supportive but told me not to tell anyone. When he was working on his PhD noone knew about it.

Thank you so much for sharing, I can really relate to the lingering feelings you have about "the truth". I also, am interested to know how your extended family dealt with your fade and is your wife still "in"?

Just want to introduce myself
by cjones inhi everyone, i have been lurking for a very long time and have been pretty much blown away and sickened by what i have learned on this discussion forum (this is actually the first forum i had ever visted).
i am married to man who was not a jw when i met him (although he was raised as one from his early teens but left when he was in his 20's, oh and that was when he started attending college), to make a long story short we met, fell in love, got married, had a few children and then 20 yrs later he started attending the "meetings" or better yet "the indoctrination sessions" again, which btw he did not tell me that that was what he was doing!!
shortly thereafter i began noticing changes in his personality, and it wasn't for the better.

Hi Cjones,
Thanks for sharing your story. Just knowing you have support of like minded people will help. What does your husband say about the sex abuse cases and the way the organization handles them? Doctrine may not get his attention but as a father, how can he accomadate this? Does he want to take the kids to meetings ? I hope he sees the light. Sounds like you are doing everything you possibly can. You are in our thoughts!
